In brief: Uruguay

Uruguay: Exports from Uruguay were worth US$846m in September, up 18.5% compared with the same time last year according to a report published by the Uruguayan institute for the promotion of import and exports. This was mainly due to a record soy crop. The country’s other main exports for September were: beef, cellulose, dairy products, wood and pharmaceutical products. However, one major trade barrier for Uruguay is tariffs levied on agricultural and livestock products such as beef by the European Union – the country’s third biggest trading partner. Uruguay is therefore pushing to close a trade deal between the Southern Common Markets bloc (Mercosur) and the EU.
